UCONN EQUESTRIAN IHSA
From the moment I first joined the UConn Equestrian Team, I knew I had found my group of people. Surrounded by riders who shared my enthusiasm for all things equine, I quickly made bonds that would last a lifetime. Each lesson became a blend of focused training and contagious laughter, as we honed our skills in the saddle while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Being new to the team, and very different from competing individually, I was entranced by the way everyone was so supportive and friendly to each other. I knew from then I would love to be able to lead the team and be a role model for those like me in the future.
From my junior through senior year, I served as the captain of the team. It was a very rewarding moment when I heard I was elected by the team to be their captain. Knowing my hard work with the team and horses paid off was a feeling everyone should be able to experience once day. Being captain opened doors for collaboration with other university teams, fostering a sense of camaraderie that transcended competitive boundaries. Whether it was coordinating team practices or participating in intercollegiate competitions, these interactions not only enriched my equestrian experience but also forged lasting friendships beyond the stables.
Beyond the thrill of competition, my role as captain taught me invaluable lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and the importance of embracing challenges head-on. It instilled in me a deep sense of pride in representing my team at shows and for the university, and filled me with the confidence to tackle any obstacle that came my way.
Reflecting on my journey with the University of Connecticut's equestrian team, I realized how different of a person I became becuase of the team. Being on a team, as well as being the captain, not only helped develop my leadership skills, but it also helped me overcome my social anxiety. I was put in situations that required me to be confrontational and a positive influence for those around me. I am filled with immense gratitude for the personal growth, memories made, the friendships forged, and the lessons learned. Though my time as captain is now done, I see the passion that has continuted to thrive within the heart of the team, carrying them forward on their journey through being college equestrians.
